  • Legal Assistant

    Bishop & McKenzie LLP is currently accepting applications for a Legal Assistant to assist Collection Paralegals and Lawyers with unsecured collections files. We are looking for a full-time, enthusiastic, motivated person to work in a busy department.

    The successful candidate will have strong Microsoft Word and Excel skills, exceptional organizational skills, and be able to handle a wide variety of legal and administrative duties within the legal sphere. This includes the ability to prepare legal documents and correspondence, respond to telephone and email inquiries. You must also have a broad and thorough knowledge of the concepts and principles is essential to this role.

    Responsibilities:
    • Opening files
    • Conducting Court House, Personal Property Registry, Land titles and other miscellaneous searches
    • Conducting digital dictation, preparing and revising documents and correspondence (demand letters, statements of claim, garnishee summons, writs of enforcement)
    • Communicating with debtors, process servers and managing the status of files
    • Updating the client database
    • Creating excel templates and calculating balances using MS Excel
    • Preparing internal accounting paperwork such as deposits, cheque requisitions, and payments
    • Maintaining and organizing files both electronically and in hard copy
    • Monitoring calendars, meeting deadlines
    • Managing client billings
    • Clerical duties: emailing/faxing documents daily
    • Assisting the paralegals with any urgent items

    Requirements:
    • Degree or Diploma specializing in Paralegal/Legal Assistant required
    • 1-2 years of previous work experience in a legal environment/legal assistant capacity is preferred
    • Strong knowledge of basic legal concepts, principles, and terminology
    • Thorough understanding of collections related statutes, court decisions, and legal documentation
    • Good research skills, utilizing both the Internet and traditional sources of information
    • Meticulous records maintenance skills

    • Process purchase transactions, prepare mortgages, refinancing and supplemental documents, report to mortgages and purchaser in a timely manner
