  • Collections & Litigation Legal Assistant – Job Posting

    Bishop & McKenzie LLP is currently accepting applications for a Collections & Litigation Legal Assistant to join their team in Edmonton. We are looking for a full-time highly motivated person to provide exceptional support to our lawyers and clients in a busy department. To thrive in this challenging role, you will embrace variety and have excellent communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills. Key Functions:

    • Responsible for managing a portfolio of unsecured collections and secured collections files
    • Communicating directly with clients, including receiving instructions and proper reporting on all files in a professional manner
    • Preparation of unsecured collections and secured collections pleadings
    • Drafting various types of correspondence such as demand letters, post-judgment letters, pay or pack letters, payout letters, follow up letters, settlement letters etc.
    • Conducting searches such as Motor Vehicle, Personal Property Registry, Land Titles, Bankruptcy, and Corporate
    • Registrations at Land Titles
    • Ensuring that limitation dates are met and files are diarized
    • PPSA (Personal Property Security Agreement) and Writ of Enforcement seizures
    • Negotiating settlements and payment plans with debtors
    • Calculating balances and administering payments
    • Monitoring client portals daily
    • Preparing and sending Monthly billings

    Requirements:

    • Legal Assistant certificate or diploma
    • Experience in Civil/Commercial enforcement an asset
    • 2 - 5 years and direct work experience in a litigation or collections legal assistant capacity
    • Experience in TechCom LMS an asset
    • Critical thinking, analysis, and research skills are essential
    • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment within/under deadlines
    • Strong computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically, Outlook, Word and Excel, as well as document management systems such as ProLaw
    • Strong sense of ethics and the ability to handle sensitive or private information with tact and discretion; knowledge of data privacy laws.
    • Superior interpersonal skills to interact with employees, lawyers, clients, departments, external agencies and work as a team player
    • Proficient in recording time and billing of matters
    • Meticulous records maintenance skills
    • Strong customer service orientated
